The article seems incomplete without reference to Jean Auel’s fiction on the subject, starting with Clan of the Cave Bear in 1984. She explored the ‘fall in love and settle down’ part, but also adoption and rape.

It’s still all speculation, but based on copious amounts of research.

Jean M. Auel is one of the world’s most esteemed and beloved authors. Her extensive factual research has earned her the respect of renowned scientists, archaeologists and anthropologists around the globe.

I’m for just about anything that diversifies the gene pool.

So, why does it matter that Homo sapiens had sex with Neanderthals? It matters because now we have genetic evidence that humans as a species don’t always kill and destroy what we don’t understand. Sometimes, we fall in love and settle down instead.

I’m not sure that the inclusion of some Neanderthal DNA in the genome of most people on the planet is a reason to start singing kumbaya. Given how fraught current racial tensions continue to be on the planet, I suspect that the overall relationship between Neanderthal clans and Cro Magnons was one of distrust, competition and at times warfare. DNA analysis on the conquest of Finland by the Finno-Ugrians (~3000 BC) reveals that the invading hordes from the East slaughtered all the men and took the women for themselves.

The whole “fall in love and settle down” thing seems sophomoric in this context. For tens of thousands of years, “falling in love” seems to have had no major role in family formation. Women were essentially traded for and bartered over until…..or wait, that STILL happens a lot! And other species like lions and tigers will produce offspring——-ligers and tiglons—— without falling in love. I know the science is just getting started on the interactions between Neanderthals and modern man, but attributing romantic pairings to them because of shared DNA seems silly since the whole romantic love meme has only relatively recently become a major cultural force. More likely, modern men kidnapped and raped Neanderthal females.

It also matters because it was probably really hot and dirty, with hilarious prehistoric walks of shame.
